Eat the elephant one bite at a time

As humans, we sometimes create our own barriers or allow ourselves to be influenced by other people who put obstacles in our way or make us doubt. Here are my five strategies that I share with the people I support, my children and my friends, to move forward and complete a project, take on a challenge or take on a new teaching position, even if you are an experienced teacher, a new direction or an adult chaperone.

1. Break down the project

As the saying goes, “eat an elephant one bite at a time.” » Break down my big project into small, manageable tasks. This will make each step more affordable and allow us to measure your progress in a tangible way.

  • I see the first step, not the whole staircase and the visual tells me that “Yes I am capable”.

2. Establish clear and realistic goals

Define specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound (SMART) goals. Having clear goals helps me stay focused and motivated throughout my journey.

  • I like to put a deadline on my personal calendar and check-ins with myself (steps) to get there.

3. Cultivate a growth mindset

Adopts a growth mindset by viewing challenges as learning opportunities rather than obstacles. Be open to continuous learning and persevere despite setbacks. It is this resilience that will propel us towards success.

  • I like to target one intention per day and to succeed, set a goal not to let myself be distracted (tip: I write this distraction in my journal so that it is visible).

4. Seek support and collaboration

Don't underestimate the power of the network. Collaborate with your colleagues, mentors, and other professionals. Seeking advice and support can give you new perspectives and ideas for overcoming obstacles.

  • I surround myself with people who are 2 steps ahead of me in order to have advice, tips, strategies, help. I target people who work in another field to give me a different perspective.

5. Practice self-compassion

Be kind to yourself. Recognize your efforts and your progress, even the smallest ones. Self-kindness strengthens our resilience and our motivation to continue.

Whatever our situation (myself included), let's remember that every little step counts and that perseverance and collaboration are key to success. These strategies can help us move forward with confidence and determination.

  • I know I’ll eventually finish eating the elephant—one bite at a time! And if I forget, my husband is always there to remind me: Take your own advice, Nancy—let’s go!

Let’s get into action mode! 💪🚀

Creator of potential,
